Planet Robot Rants & Raves - True Limit Productions

Over the years, we have received quite a lot of mail - here are some of our favorites:

These have made all our efforts worthwhile;

Open Quote Dear Planetrobot,

I am letting you know that the Robot arrived safely. My husband had an original one of these Robots when he was a child, which has since disappeared into the past, but he remembered it as it was brand new.

This is the reason we bought one of your reproductions, rather than trying to find an original. We were trying to replace not only a toy, but also a memory.

He is thrilled with everything about his Robot, from the way you packaged it, to the little shuffle it does across the table with its eyes aglow. Your wonderful toy arrived in perfect condition.

Thank you,
June B

Open Quote Greetings Planet Robot!

Ran across this photo yesterday while looking through my Mom's collection! I didn't know it (photo) existed, but it gave me the ability to hunt down what was a foggy memory.

I had searched before, but thought his name was Sparky, which always led to a robot not quite the same as what I remembered. Today, with the search anew, I ran across a red face zoomer on eBay which seemed near, except for color, arms, and being a wind-up. I then googled "zoomer robot" and Bingo, there you were! I was excited to find that you offer what appears to be the exact model in silver.

Photo has print date on back of Feb. 4, 1956. I would have received Zoomer for Christmas, 1955 at the age of 5. And now, I will be receiving him again for Christmas 2007 at 57, as I just finished ordering him from you. I think I may be as excited now as I was then! I also am your most recent member!

Thanks so much for returning a once cherished object from my childhood days to me!

Merry Christmas!!!

And this one is quite a revelation;

Open Quote Hello there,

Just wanted to say that you're doing a great job on your robots. I bought a couple of them some weeks ago and put them up in my display case. Somehow they didn't seem to fit in with my other robots (all of them are originals). Pondering this, it dawned on me that your robots, while looking every bit like the originals, were brand new!

So here's what I did, and believe me it works brilliantly! As an experiment, I first tried it on the Blue Winky. I put it on the floor of my garage, and gently pushed it around a bit while turning it over every now and then. What this does is simulate the wear and tear of an old toy with some light scuffing and scratches.

Then I buffed it somewhat with a mild polish (I used silversmith's) just to take the edge off the fresh scratches, I put a bit more pressure on the high points while buffing and this gives a nice sheen that looks like normal handling wear.

The trick is to judge the degree of scratching and buffing right. I wanted it to look like a well loved old toy that may have once belonged to a child, gently used but not abused. The final step is to make the paint fade a little. I have an exposure unit (with UV lights) so it was easier and faster, but I believe leaving it for some time in bright sunlight should work too.

Well anyway, I am rather pleased with the way it turned out. I've repeated the aging with great success on the rest of the robots. They're near impossible to tell from the originals now. In fact, I just sold one of the "newly aged" Zoomers for a very good price. Of course, I made full disclosures to the buyer.

Keep up the good work, Cheers!
